Grief Counselors at School After Prom Night Deaths of Two Girls
A South Jersey community is reeling after two teenage girls died early Saturday morning in a car crash after attending their prom.
The girls attended the Bridgeton High School prom Friday night. School officials said grief counselors would be made available to students on Monday.
According to a report by the Press of Atlantic City, Daisia Sulton, 17, and Mikayla Mosley, 15, both of Bridgeton, Cumberland County, were on their way home from a post-prom celebration in Ocean City with two other teens about 3:45 a.m. Saturday when Sulton lost control of the car on Route 49, crossed the median and struck a tree.
Sulton and Mosley both died at the scene, according to police.
The other two teens who were in the car at the time, Jada Barriento, 17, and and Eyiah Stocks, 16, remained in the hospital Sunday morning. Both were in critical condition when they were taken to Cooper Medical Center from the site of the crash.
Bridgeton Superintendent of Schools, Thomasina Jones, said the girls are in the 10th and 11th grade. According to Jones, the news of the tragedy came on the same day they were laying another student to rest. That student was killed in a recent car crash.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, and certainly we are praying for the two students who are in the hospital right now. We want them to pull through and recover from the crash,” Jones said.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, local residents, Eric and Catherine Osborn, live right by the accident scene on Route 49 near Port Elizabeth-Cumberland Road and were sleeping when they were awoken by their dogs barking.
"Eric Osborn said the couple were sleeping Saturday morning when their dogs started barking and they heard a “couple of bumps” that sounded like car doors. He said he and wife went outside and saw Sulton’s car up against a tree. He said he could find no brake marks leading up to where the eastbound shoulder of Route 49 met with grass on his property.
Another vehicle containing three boys and which was traveling west on Route 49 turned around and came to the accident site,” Eric Osborn said. The boys said it was prom night and they and the four girls were returning to Bridgeton from Ocean City, Catherine Osborn said. The cause of the crash remained under investigation by state police on Sunday.
