The FBI has released a warning of an email scam targeting online payroll accounts which could affect residents of the Garden State.

According to NJ.com, online payroll accounts are being targeted by scammers and they are going after funds from employee's paychecks.

There have been reports by the FBI of cyber criminals trying to gain access to an employee's username and password by initiating "phishing emails". The scammer gains access to the online account and changes bank information so the direct deposits can be transferred to usually a prepaid card, according to the report.

The most affected fields are education, healthcare, and commercial airway transportation systems. You can contact the FBI If you think you've been a target of this scam or if you noticed any suspicious activity.

You should also alert your employer or HR department if you receive any suspicious emails, or a request for you personal information.
