The school community at Egg Harbor Township High School is grieving the passing of a popular Spanish teacher. 

Yamilei Socorro, 34, of Egg Harbor Township died on Saturday, Oct. 3 from cancer. Socorro is being fondly remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and teacher.

According to her obituary, "she was an Atlantic City High School graduate and formed part of the Latinos Unidos Club and also the field hockey team. An alumni of Rowan University and a teacher at Egg Harbor Township High School for 13 years.

She founded the EHTHS Hispanic American Club and was instrumental in the development of the Heritage Speakers (Hispanohablantes) program at the high school, which offers classes in all levels concluding with Advance Placement Spanish Literature."

Past and present students have been sharing memories on social media of Socorro as a gifted teacher and a "kind, gentle soul". She is survived by her husband and two children.

A viewing is  planned from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, on Wednesday, October 7, at Oasis United Methodist Church, 316 Martin Luther King Jr Ave, in Pleasantville.
