After causing controversy for almost 60 years, the only traffic lights on the entire 173-mile length of New Jersey's Garden State Parkway have been replaced with overpasses. Southbound, anyway.

The lights at exits 9,10 and 11; Shell Bay Avenue, Crest Haven Boulevard and Stone Harbor Boulevard, have been replaced by overpasses in the southbound direction. Work now begins on the northbound overpasses, expected to be completed in November 2015.

The lights have not only have been a source of frustration to drivers for decades, but have had deadly consequences. One grieving father counted 14 deaths just at exit 10 of the Parkway, in the years 1991 to 2006.

The newly constructed southbound overpasses opened Thursday afternoon, allowing drivers to keep moving as part of the Parkway's light removal project.

Authorities are still urging drivers to be cautious and aware of changing traffic patterns in the area.
