NJ Braces for Snow and Bitter Winter Cold

The National Weather Service has upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for some 8-10 inches of snow across most of New Jersey starting late on Tuesday morning and continuing into the evening.

The snow, beginning in late morning and continuing through the afternoon will be followed by a plunging temperatures and brisk winds on Wednesday.

Some to 8-10 inches are expected to fall in Monmouth County and northern Ocean County. 2-4 inches are expected in Sussex County,

Many schools are dismissing classes early on Tuesday or canceling all together.

Latest list of cancellations and delays

According to a NWS briefing. The low will pull in moisture from the Atlantic Ocean as it intensifies off the coast causing the heaviest snow will fall between noon and midnight on Tuesday with snow falling at the rate of an inch per hour.

Winds during the storm will be out of the northeast at 15-25 MPH gusting to 35 MPH making for a wind chill of 10.

The blowing and drifting snow will also reduce visibility on Tuesday afternoon and evening as plowed snow blows back onto the highway.

As the snow ends Tuesday evening, temperatures wlll become bitter cold as winds turn to the northwest. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the teens and single numbers making for a wind chills of -5 to -10 by Wednesday morning,  with blowing and drifting snow.

As always, bitter cold will bring with it the threat of water pipes bursting and slick roadways as chemicals used to treat the roads become less effective.

Preparing for the Cold

New Jersey Transit will cross-honor tickets systemwide on buses, light rail and trains on Tuesday.

Tent City in Lakewood on their Facebook page put a call out for donations of Duraflame logs. “They burn longer and cleaner than regular firewood, and are easier to ignite. They are used in conjunction with regular firewood,” explains the post. The logs can be  dropped off at Tent City which is located at the intersection of Cedar Bridge Ave and South Clover Street.
