A troubled Atlantic City woman has been charged with second-degree assault after throwing her month-old baby into the water off the jetty at the end of Pacific Avenue in Atlantic City's inlet section.

It was about 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon when a group of fishermen saw a woman take a baby from a stroller and walk out on to the the slippery rocks of the inlet jetty.  The woman then threw the infant into the bay before jumping in herself in an apparent suicide attempt.

The Press of Atlantic City has identified the woman as Patricia Shurig, 23. of North Carolina Avenue. She was charged and taken to the Atlantic County jail on $100,000 bail.

Bystander Dung Tran is quoted in the Press article as saying he saw the woman raise the baby toward the sky, lower it, walk to the water and jump into the inlet.

That's when a group of men sprang into action, rushing out on to the rocks to save the pair.

Tom Bell, a veteran city firefighter, managed to grab the baby from the woman and perform CPR to quickly resuscitate the child.

Sam Perkins, of Galloway and Luis Ortiz jumped into the cold water and were eventually able to pull the woman to shore. "She was 100 feet out, drowning.  I said, 'I'm going to go in for you but you can't panic and don't try to grab me' and that's it, I went in for her", Ortiz said.

Last night, Atlantic City Police spokesperson Sgt. Monica McMenamin hailed the bravery of the responding men,  calling the case "a great outcome to a nearly deadly indecent".
