There is an ongoing scam to be aware of for the New Year and beyond.

The latest scam to watch out for, according to NJ.com, concerns Social Security and the agency's 1-800 number.

Scammers have been calling people posing as workers from Social Security. The call seems legit because the number on the caller id will look like it came from the 1-800 customer service department from Social Security.

The alert for this scam was also issued by the Office if the Inspector General at the beginning of December, 2018.

Scammers will try to mislead you that there is something wrong with your account and they will threaten you with prosecution if you don't turn over more information and call a bogus number given by the scammer. The legitimate number for the agency's customer service department is 1-800-772-1213.

You should immediately hang up and discontinue the call if you feel you are being scammed. You can also report the scam by calling the Office of Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271.
