An 11-year-old child died Wednesday morning in a single-car crash on Rt. 47 in the Goshen section of Middle Township.

Police arrived on the scene of the crash just before 10a.m. to find a white Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Kristin Conner, of villas, had left the road at a curve and hit a utility pole, then a tree.

Conner was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment.  The passenger, her 11-year-old daughter, was ejected from the truck and suffered fatal injuries.

The girl becomes the fourth person to die on State Highway 47 this year.  In April, both drivers in a head-on accident while passing died at a curved section of road .

According to the Press of Atlantic City, more than 30 motorists have died on the curvy two-lane highway in Cape May County since 1999, many of them in Middle Township. There have been other fatalities in Cumberland County. By comparison, less than 20 people have died on the Garden State Parkway in Cape May County during that time.

The state has announced a $5 million project to put a ramble strip down the center line of the highway, but work is not likely to begin until winter.

At least until then, and, especially during the busy summer season with its additional tourist traffic, you would be well-advised to drive very carefully on Highway 47.
